PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a healing substance created using components from your own blood. When injected, it promotes cell growth and regeneration.

PRP contains two concentrated components of your blood: plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid base of your blood. While it’s mostly comprised of water, it also contains important proteins for cell growth called growth factors.

Platelets, the other component of PRP, are irregularly-shaped cells in your blood that help it clot and form a scab after an injury. They also contain growth factors that aid in the healing process.

What can PRP do?

You can get PRP injections by themselves or as part of another treatment. PRP has a growing list of applications in medicine, the most notable of which is aiding in the healing of injured tissues and joints.

For cosmetic purposes, you can get PRP for:

Hair loss

PRP injections help promote hair growth by stimulating your follicles. You can also add them to a hair transplant procedure to accelerate the growth of your new roots.

Skin rejuvenation

When injected into your skin, PRP helps heal old scars and aid in the healing of the small injuries caused by microneedling, a procedure called a vampire facial.

How is PRP obtained?

To get the PRP to use in your treatment, Dr. Guzman must first draw some of your blood. She places the vial of your blood into a rotating device called a centrifuge that spins continuously for 10-15 minutes. This causes the components of your blood to separate into layers.

Dr. Guzman removes the layer containing only platelets and plasma and prepares it for your injections. Before injecting the PRP, she numbs the treatment area with lidocaine.

Do PRP injections have any side effects?

PRP comes from your own body and therefore doesn’t typically cause any adverse reactions. However, the injections themselves potentially cause some side effects.

You might experience:

  • Injection-site pain
  • Tissue damage
  • Soreness
  • Bruising

Dr. Guzman gives you instructions after your injection to minimize any discomfort or irritation that occurs from the needle. You’ll enjoy your results for about six months, and you can get follow-up injections to maintain your improvements.

PRP is a natural and safe injection option when it comes to cosmetic procedures. To learn more about what it can do for your skin or hair, call Maui Medi-Spa and Cosmetic Laser or book your appointment online today.
